HOW CAN FAILING SCHOOLS BE IMPROVED?

When a school fails, it is not only the name of the school that goes down. Along with the school, the school administrator also fails. A school administrator is responsible for the working of the school. A failing school is not only the one which has students scoring less in exams as compared to other schools but is the one which does not move ahead with time. Schools are the temples of education where each and every student has a right to get new and innovative ways of education.

Schools are the places where students learn to appreciate new ideologies and accept suggestions for improvement in their personality. While schools build up a child’s outlook, schools should also implement new changes with time. School administration should be full of freshness that comes with a blend of new with old.

HOW CAN FAILING SCHOOLS BE IMPROVED

Researchers have found that high performance in a school can be found when a series of steps are taken. Scientists from Oxford universities, London Business School and Kingston universities studied the traits of various successful schools in the country and found that all successful schools ran on similar patterns.

Even though teachers have a direct approach towards student learning, school administration is the one department that needs to be strong orders to turn around a failing school. A leader helps in improving the school performance more than any other factor. Failing schools can only be improved from within. With compassionate intervention, recovery of failing schools is accelerated. With compassionate intervention, there is no collateral damage and rise to sustained development.

WHAT ALL CAN BE DONE

  • It is always a good idea to make an investment in imbibing good principles to improve the learning throughout the school.

The school administrators should make sure that every student can learn beyond the walls of the classrooms. The teachers and students should be motivated to imbibe excellent principles. The school atmosphere should promote the atmosphere of professional communities where each and every teacher works together to help a student.

  • The school principals need to share decision-making process with others.

Collective leadership works wonders for turning around failing schools. The principals who share their authority i.e. collaborate with others does not lose their own. They need to create a common agenda where every staff member works towards improving the quality of education. Priorities need to be sorted in order for the administration to work better.

  • Encourage writing a weekly newspaper column.

A weekly newspaper column that highlights school’s successes helps a lot in giving recognition to the students. It can talk about the challenges and problems of the schools and ask for community participation. Each and every one can put in their suggestions and the best ones can be illustrated in the next column. This would call for overall participation by the staff, administration and students in order to help the school grow.

  • The schools should promote teacher-parent participation.

One day of a week should be reserved for meeting parents and discussing more their child. A teacher can only look after the child during the school hours. But a parent is responsible for the child’s overall life. The teachers can have a conference with the parents can discuss the burning issues at hand, the problematic scenario and take suggestions for improvement. This helps in providing input and making schools get more personalised.

  • School administration should reward teacher of the month.

Like most business ventures, ‘teacher of the month’ awards should be kept in schools also. The winner of the month can be based on the votes of the students or fellow teachers. An award for the winner should be kept. For instance, the winner teacher can get a gift voucher or some bonus salary for the month or a day off. This would help the teachers to get recognised, work harder than ever before and become more dedicated. They can feel gratified with the recognition and strive to maintain their spot.

  • Motivate the students by good words and don’t use a zero-tolerance policy.

It is always a good thing for the teachers to include each and every student in the topic discussion. Even though anyone can be bugged by the disruptive students, it is always a good idea to include them in. The zero-tolerance behaviour policy tends to make the students feel discouraged. Teachers should be encouraging towards the students who don’t understand stuff easily.

  • Schools should always incorporate new technology into teaching.

New teaching methods help the students to learn faster than ever. E-education helps the students to have fun while learning which deeply impacts their learning process. The use of audio and visual media combines with graphics, presentations; 3D atmosphere etc can help in improving the overall grades of the students. But this does not mean that investing in more resources can help in speeding up the process of recovery. Changes made at the right time in the right order make the difference.
