HOW CAN THE PROBLEM OF SPACE JUNK BE RESOLVED?

Humans have already managed to create a “junk” chaos on the planet. It is not surprising that same has been done in the neighbouring area o Earth’s orbit. The main crux of the problem is the amount of space junk lying around. There are more than 100 million pieces of the debris created by humans, lying around the planet. The question arises is about the cleanliness measures that can be taken for keeping the Earth’s orbit safe for the satellites.

The dead satellites and the residues left behind in various missions make up for a lot of space junk. There are various missions scheduled by the Governments to clean up space junk for making the Earth’s orbit safe for other satellites.

SOME OF THE WAYS OF SOLVING SPACE JUNK

  1. By using a giant net

Giant magnetic nets are being made by a Japanese Space Agency, JAXA for removing the space junk. It is expected to capture the debris and remove it from the orbit’s neighbouring area.

  2. By pushing the debris out of Space

Switzerland’s company design a project titled ‘Clean Space One’, which would use a plane for launching the janitor satellite (also called Swiss Cube nanosatellite) to clean up the space junk. They aim to identify and eliminate all the space junk out of the Space.

  3. By using electricity

Japan’s Aerospace Agency aims to develop a spacecraft having 700-meter long electrodynamic tether. They would then insert it into the pile of space junk. The tether is said to create electrical energy which would slow down the space debris and pull it to a lower orbit. This, in turn, would lead it to come closer and burning up in the Earths atmosphere.

  4. By reducing, reusing and recycling the junk

DARPA has proposed to create a robotic handyman for using the old satellites for creating new ones. The old usable parts from older satellites would be recycled to be used in the new satellite. The satellites in the space will also be upgraded to the latest versions.

THE END LINE

Space junk is an important issue to be dealt with. Derelict satellites, springs, bolts, spent rocket stages, busted up spacecraft pieces, residue left behind by the spacecraft etc in the Earth’s orbit make up for the space junk. If the solutions are not taken care of, the situation will move out of hand and will lead to a point of no return.
