These days, the vitamins and mineral supplements come with printed labels that claim a lot. By consuming them, you would lose weight, get boosted up with energy, improve your overall performance, reduce the signs of ageing and be able to beat stress. But, can these supplements really live up to their big claims?

FOOD VS SUPPLEMENTS- THE BATTLE BETWEEN THE TWO

Fresh foods are loaded with nutrients like magnesium, vitamins and calcium that are much needed for maintaining the overall health. However, these days, vitamin and mineral supplements have taken over and people take them aggressively to maintain the diet, substituting fresh foods. People pop a pill in their mouths and skip out on food, claiming that they have got the required quotient of vitamins needed. But, this is no way.

With ageing, even a well-balanced diet can also make you fall short of the nutrients required by the body. With age, the body loses its ability to absorb sufficient nutrients from food. We tend to eat less than the required amount which again proves to be problematic since energy needs also differ.

Here, dietary supplements come to fill in the much-needed gaps in the diet. But, taking extra doses can be harmful since the body requires only a sufficient amount and not more. For example, an excess of Vitamin A can become toxic.

When the food palate falls short of  much-needed nutrients, the supplements come to play their role. These can even be used for preventing the deficiencies that are caused by  lack of sufficient vitamins and minerals but these cannot take the place of actual food. Supplements are for older people who cannot digest their food properly and need support of additional supplements to compensate for their lack of diet.

THE VERDICT

Even though vitamin supplements and minerals are good substitutes, the vitamins and minerals derived naturally from fresh foods can never be defeated. They are the most natural form and are healthier than consuming the supplements. Supplements are needed with age and not before that. Supplements should be taken with genuine deficiency and under the guidance of a doctor. Otherwise, it is always wise to go for the food that provides the minerals and vitamins.

The health benefits from the dietary supplements cannot beat the food substitute for the same. The power of healing and health benefits lies in the actual food and not pills.
