Fresh foods are loaded with nutrients like magnesium, vitamins and calcium that are much needed for maintaining the overall health. However, these days, vitamin and mineral supplements have taken over and people take them aggressively to maintain the diet, substituting fresh foods. People pop a pill in their mouths and skip out on food, claiming that they have got the required quotient of vitamins needed. But, this is no way.
With ageing, even a well-balanced diet can also make you fall short of the nutrients required by the body. With age, the body loses its ability to absorb sufficient nutrients from food. We tend to eat less than the required amount which again proves to be problematic since energy needs also differ.

Even though vitamin supplements and minerals are good substitutes, the vitamins and minerals derived naturally from fresh foods can never be defeated. They are the most natural form and are healthier than consuming the supplements. Supplements are needed with age and not before that. Supplements should be taken with genuine deficiency and under the guidance of a doctor. Otherwise, it is always wise to go for the food that provides the minerals and vitamins.
The health benefits from the dietary supplements cannot beat the food substitute for the same. The power of healing and health benefits lies in the actual food and not pills.
