Why Do So Many Women Get Breast Cancer

Technological advancements have made it possible to find cures for various kinds of diseases including some cancers. Even though there are still some forms of cancer which have no cure, there has been considerable progress in killing off cancerous cells. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy- the two forms of cancer treatments- have become old since cancer stem cells are resistant to such treatments.

Surgery can be used for treating an earliest form of cancer. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy seem to have lost their charm and given rise to another form of therapy- immunotherapy.

CTL019 is the name of new immune-based therapy. It is even approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration on 30th August 2017. This therapy is used for children and adults in treatment for B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia who faced relapse more than two times.

This therapy involves treatment of the disease by training the patient’s body for the fight. The patient’s T cells are engineered into chimeric antigen receptor cells which recognise the cancerous cells and kill it. This therapy is being explored for finding cures for brain cancer etc.

There is no sure shot method for recovering from cancer. However, doctors have found cures for some cancers. There is a chance that the disease can reappear later on but the cancers can be cured for the time being.

  1. Prostate Cancer

Patients with prostate cancer can live on for years without problems. However, when the cancer spread, it moves quickly to other parts of the body and becomes difficult to treat. By checking for cancer in its earliest stage, it can be treated. Digital rectal exam and PSA test can be used for examining cancer.

  2. Thyroid Cancer

The thyroid is a gland that produces hormones for burning calories, controlling heartbeat and more. Thyroid cancer can be treated with surgery by removing the gland. After the surgery, patients remain on medication for replacing the hormones produced by the thyroid. More cures are being searched for cancer.

  3. Melanoma

Melanoma skin cancer can be seen early on and treated in the early stages with a surgery. Once cancer spreads beyond the surface of the skin, it becomes difficult for treatment. Survival rates are 15 to 20% only.

  4. Breast cancer

Doctors have found ways of treating various forms of breast cancers. There are different medications that can treat each individual type of breast cancer. For example, by lowering the estrogen level through drugs, estrogen receptor-positive- a breast tumour can be cured. Mammography should be done often to make sure that you don’t suffer from cancer.

  5. Testicular cancer

Surgery can be done by removing one or both testicles if they have a tumour. If there is the removal of only one testicle, the man can still produce children and have sex. Radiation and chemotherapy are used in later stages. The survival rate is 73%.
