HOW CLOSE ARE THE COMPUTERS IN MIMICKING THE HUMAN BRAIN?

The scientists at IBM have claimed to have made a breakthrough in computer field after mimicking numerous neurons. Neurons are the cells that help in processing and transmission of chemical and electrical signals. The electrical signals or synapses are connected to other cells in the body. The idea behind the body’s mechanism gave rise to the idea behind such an invention.

The scientists at IBM have been trying to recreate the biological brain functions in computers by using the phase change materials for the applications related to memory. Scientists have always been trying their hand to recreate the human brain but this is the first time that artificial neurons have been created. These randomly spike and can be used for transmission of information.

THE BREAKTHROUGH

The human brain tends to be the mastermind behind the inspiration for artificial neural networks or computer algorithms. Artificial intelligence has been developed to such an extent that it can be used for detection of lies, prediction of diseases and heart attacks, recognising faces and acting as a companion.

The team of engineers at IBM have made a breakthrough in this field by designing a computer that mimics neurons by using beams of light. The applications of deep learning can run smoothly and faster because of that.

THREE COMPUTERS THAT CAN MIMIC THE HUMAN BRAIN

With the growing understanding of the functions of the human brain, man has been able to invent new machines that are more efficient and powerful. Computers have always tried to mimic the brain functions and abilities. These three have succeeded to a limit-

  1. Synapse by IBM

    The Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics (SyNAPSE) project by IBM has managed to mimic the functional ability of neurons in establishing synaptic connections. The TrueNorth chip is a small device that consists of over one million programmable neurons, 5.4 billion transistors and 256 programmable synapses.

  2. Neurogrid circuit by Stanford

    The Neurogrid circuit was developed by scientists at Standford University. The circuit board consists of 16 neuro core chips consisting of 65,536 neurons and billions of synapses. The Neurogrid device can mimic the functional ability of the brain by establishing neural connections.

  3. Neural Turning machine by DeepMind

    DeepMind is a company by Google which has developed a neural network. It can access the external memory and mimic the short-term working memory of the brain. It stores the short-term memories and uses them later for undertaking logical tasks.
