WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN DIET AND LIFESPAN?

In lab animals, for extending their lifespan, they are kept under total caloric restriction without becoming malnourished. This also helps them to eliminate various age-related risks for diseases. The research head, Dr Rogers, found that on a restricted diet, there is the elimination of miscoded genetic messages along with extending lifespan.

The research work was done on species called C. Elegans, a microscopic roundworm sharing half of its genes with humans. In the research, it was observed that restricting the diet resulted in activating nonsense-mediated decay (regulatory mechanism responsible for getting rid of miscoded genetic messages) which further led to the extension of life.

Currently, the scientific community is trying to develop drugs therapies which can be used to work for longevity. The focus lies on prevention of age-related diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

IDEAL WEIGHT

Body mass index sets the standard for normal weight for a person. There is no universal ideal weight which can be held true for all individuals. Every body type is different and based on that body mass index is taken out for calculating an ideal weight for an individual. BMI ranging from 18.5 to 25 is considered normal, range 25 to 30 is considered overweight while above 30 is considered to be obese. People at higher BMI rates lay at the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

CONNECTION BETWEEN DIET AND LIFESPAN

There have been various experiments held on animals that proved that calorie restriction leads to improved resistance towards disease and extended lifespan. Fewer calories help in reducing the accumulation of oxidant and free radical damage. It also helps in lowering fat deposition in the body which leads to obesity and hormonal changes.

This, in turn, helps the immune system to improve and develop resistance towards various diseases including some forms of cancer. There have been various studies indicating the same results in humans. The longevity in lifespan comes with calorie reduction in the diet.

It is vital to get optimal nutrition without extra calorie intake. This would lead to long and healthy life. The calories can be restricted by following a good diet plan, based on your boy metabolism. Whether it is low carb diet or low-fat diet, cutting down on sugar makes a difference. Calorie restriction lowers the body temperature to provide anti-ageing benefits.

For overall health and extending lifespan, it is important to be healthy. Underweight or obese people suffer from various problems. Monitoring calories become vital for remaining healthy, safe and living a long life.
