DARPA changes the innovations in technology for usage in the military sector.
DARPA is the main crux of the central research and development organisation in the Department of Defence. DARPA employs the use of innovations for creating a defence of our country.
DARPA TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES
Even though starting a technological venture is difficult and takes a lot of time and money, DARPA involves itself in funding the technology which can help in making the life better for the civilians.
Researchers have even managed to create a robotic exoskeleton for the stroke victims to use their legs again. Almost 90% of the stroke patients were diagnosed with partial paralysis which left them with an abnormal gait. The exosuits created by DARPA worked to correct the motion of walking by the pulling cords which were attached to the shoe insole and giving a torque to the ankle.
The suit enables the stroke victims in maintaining their balance and walking simultaneously. The suits are meant to provide protection and help them in walking like they used to do before the paralysis. The exosuit is very light unlike the bulky ones in the past and runs on a decent battery. DARPA plans to implement such assistive exosuits for the military applications.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE TECHNOLOGY
However, with extensive research, scientists have found that the use of exosuits, in the long run, can decrease the time that it takes for the stroke patients to recover in the future. The exosuits, provide support to the legs, but they basically decrease the time that it would have normally taken for the patient to recover from the paralysis.
With the use of exosuits, the patients can walk normally over the surfaces but they are being assisted by the machine. This dependency on the machine can be fatal for their natural instinct and they might get too dependent on the machine for walking. They might not try to use the flexibility of their legs and try to walk.
