Higgs Boson refers to elementary particles in the realm of particle physics. Back in 1964, Peter Higgs, a British scientist, wrote a paper stating the reason behind why elementary particles consist of mass. He referred to the existence of a three-dimensional field permeating through space and it drags everything moving through it.
Higgs field is of a constant value in a vacuum unlike other fields. Higgs bosons are the packages of energy which are related to Higgs field. Higgs boson has no electric charge, is a no spin-boson and has no colour charge. Scientists can detect such fields only when the real Higgs boson particles flares up owing to the Higgs field become excited, and that energy spot is detected by the scientists.
WILL IT DESTROY THE UNIVERSE?
On 4th July 2012, scientists at CERN detected a particle behaving in the similar manner as Higgs Boson particle does. In Switzerland, two beams of protons were collided at high speed, making the discovery possible. Higgs boson particle is extremely important to unravel or else the mystery of the world cannot be solved.
Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist, who claimed in his essays ‘Starmus’ that Higgs Boson can lead to the destruction of the universe. But, can it actually destroy the universe? No, it cannot. Higgs boson is a little ripple in the Higgs field. It has a short life before disintegrating into other particles within seconds. Stephen Hawking’s book is not based on actual facts.
The theory of Higgs boson doomsday is as far away from reality as possible. According to Higgs boson doomsday theory, a quantum fluctuation could cause a vacuum bubble to expand through the entire space and wipe out the universe. But this can take trillions of years to happen if it were to happen.
The possibility arose with the discovery of Higgs Boson particles. But it is entirely based on an assumption that discovered particles are the only ones affecting Higgs field and there are no other factors affecting it. Scientists believe that a corresponding boson acts upon the matter with respect to each one of the four fundamental forces.
For Higgs boson to lead to the destruction of the universe, all the assumptions should be true, an incredible amount of energy is needed which is beyond human control, umpteenth time is going to be spent amongst other factors.
