According to the sources, a new center at MIT can lead to advancement of artificial intelligence along with establishing IBM as the leader in the field. Artificial intelligence is the need of the hour. Everyone today is transfixed about machines performing various tasks while giving human suggestions.
The field of artificial intelligence can be advanced by opening up a new $240 million center at MIT. It would be used for developing materials and new devices for powering up the algorithm learning machines. Artificial intelligence has led to various major advancements that help in recognition of voice and machine vision. By developing new computing devices and quantum computers, IBM might be able to relinquish its reputation of producing best Artificial intelligence.
MIT and IBM have joined hands together to announce the project. The research conducted would be in the field of deep learning along with exploring new computing devices, quantum computers, materials and others.
Dario Gill, the vice president of Artificial Intelligence sector at IBM research, claims that innovations are being carried out using the same old silicon and architectures while material science and devices are not being paid proper heed to. The center aims to explore how AI can be used in security and health care industries. It also aims to study the economic impact of automation and AI in the society.
MIT AND IBM
During 1950s, MIT was leading the AI research. However, the shift happened with the invention of companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook and Microsoft. With this deal, MIT wants to regain its position. IBM had been responsible for developing Deep Blue. Deep Blue is the name of machine, which beat Garry Kasparov (the world’s chess champion) in 1997.
The supercomputer Watson was equipped with natural learning techniques along with machine learning. It even went on to win Jeopardy game show. With times, other companies took over the brand by offering new and more advanced technologies.
THE END RESULT
As per recent developments, other companies are taking a lead leaving IMB and MIT lagging behind. The need for the companies to reboot has been prevalent since a long time. And hence this step comes as no surprise. Novel materials and computing architectures can be used for enhancing AI algorithms.
IBM now wants to focus on novel computing devices and materials science. And this move might put them ahead of the curve.
