Nanotechnology has evolved to much greater heights, resulting in widespread application in various fields like electronics, healthcare, medicine, food, etc. Nanotechnology has helped in improving and revolutionising the industrial and technological sectors like medicine, energy, home security, information technology, food safety, transportation, environmental science amongst others.

WHAT IS NANOMEDICINE?

When nanotechnology is applied medically, it makes nanomedicine. Nanomedicine is a huge arena which covers medical applications of nanotechnology from biological devices to molecular nanotechnology biological machines, nanoelectronic biosensors etc. Presently, the nanomedicine deals with the issue of solving the problems of toxicity and impact of nanomaterials on the environment.

The basic aim of nanomedicine is to create or produce specific solutions for diagnosis of a disease, treatment and prevention of diseases. Nanomedicine acts faster than traditional drugs and targets the specified disease only. It aims to use nanotechnology for benefit of human health.

NANOTECHNOLOGY AND MEDICAL USE

Whether it is medical tools, therapies or knowledge, nanotechnology has helped in broadening the knowledge of them all. Some of the applications of nanotechnology in medical field are-

  1. Gold nanoparticles are being used for detecting the target nucleic acids and their sequence in order to find treatment. Gold nanoparticles are also under scrutiny for being used in the treatment of cancer and other diseases.
  2. When it comes to disease, correct diagnosis of the disease is most important. With nanotechnology, improved imaging and diagnostic tools are being made which helps in diagnosing the disease properly and finding the treatment. This also increases the success rates of the therapies.
  3. The advanced solid-state nanopore materials are made in such a way that they might help in developing the new novel gene sequencing technologies. The gene sequencing technologies work speedily at low cost and detect even a single molecule.
  4. Nanotechnology helps in targeting the diseases cells. Nanoparticles are encapsulated in a pill, also known as ‘smart pill’, which delivers the medicine directly at the site of cancerous cells. It does not affect the healthy cells, like in the case of chemotherapy. It can be used for the treatment of several diseases.
  5. Nanotechnology is also being used for creating regenerative medicines. Researchers are finding a way to find application for bone and neural tissue engineering. This would help in growing organs and tissues for transplantation.
  6. Nanotechnology is being incorporated in improving the effectiveness of vaccines.
  7. Recently, nanotechnology has also been used for creating instruments that can purify the human blood. Magnetic microparticles help in separation of cells and proteins from amongst the complex media. This can help in treating systemic infections like sepsis.
