Ever since Donald Trump became the President, there have been a lot of changes doing rounds. NASA has got a new head through the administration of Donald Trump. Jim Bridenstine does not appear to like the research dealing with climate change.
Jim Bridenstine is a congressman hailing from Oklahoma. In 2013, he made a statement to Congress that by 2003, the global temperatures had stopped rising. The statement was not true. If he becomes the nominee, he would lead the space agency researching on the patterns of weather and the climate change.
Even though Trump wanted to entirely scrap the earth science program (the one dealing with the weather change and climate change) and focus more on space exploration, he didn’t go any further with the proposal. In his budget for 2018, he made less than 10% reduction in the budget for the earth science program.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WEATHER AND CLIMATE SCIENCE
Weather and climate are two terms that are used in daily lives. Weather is always checked before planning something in order to avoid any mishaps. Climatic change has now become the most buzzing topic of the year. However, many people fail to see the difference between the two.
Climate is said to be the average taken of the weather. Weather is seen on a particular day. The climatic records consist of high variations and extreme values in weather. Climatic changes are the long-term changes that occur in the daily weather. Weather can change anytime during the day or hour or a minute or even season. But the climate is the average that is taken of the weather over a period of space and time.
Bridenstine cares about the weather research. He believes that tracking and studying the storms is important but researching about their root cause and the factors that enhance their power isn’t very important. His past records suggest that he would want NASA to focus more on the weather science and less on the climate science.
However, the two fields are intangible and cannot be separated. The 16 satellites of NASA along with other machinery, does not simply collect and report the data but also monitor the climate. This is what makes them an important tool that helps in preparing for any emergency response.
The future of the earth science research work seems a little dicey under the administration of Trump.
