With the advancement of technology and use of resources, there is a burning need for new resources. The pollution is increasing with every passing day, the climate is rising owing to the emission of greenhouse gases, and the resources are getting depleted. The world is slowly realizing the problem of depleting natural resources and turning to use of sustainable energy.
OCEAN CURRENTS TO BE USED FOR ENERGY GENERATION
Earth is made up of water. Despite having less freshwater content, there is unlimited water on the planet. Deriving energy from water can make a lot of changes. With the recent development in technology, a sea-powered sustainable future can become reality.
Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan employed a team of researchers who used ocean currents to generate electricity by using underwater turbines. The project was titled as ‘Sea Horse’, and was announced as successful on 20th September. They even stated that the project is ready for using commercially.
This is a major breakthrough in the industry since only one percent of the seashore in Japan can be used for the creation of 10 gigawatts of energy. This is a large amount of energy which is equal to the energy created by ten nuclear power plants.
The best part about creating sustainable energy or wave energy from the ocean is that it is renewable, cost-effective and even clean. Turbines had been strategically placed along the shore of Japan since 2013, for conversion of kinetic energy into electricity.
The turbines are pyramid shaped with its axis attached to a generator converting wave energy into electricity. The electricity is then delivered to land via cables. The ceramic seal provides anti-corrosion property.
Intelligent tetrapods are the term given to the turbines which produce sustainable energy and also help in the protection of the coast from erosion. It’s a boon in disguise on all the ends!
The research is still going on and the installation of the turbines might take a little time but the time is hot for the development. Turbines are made in such a way that they can withstand harsh diverse weather and move along the path of waves. They do not stand straight against the waves but bend with the flow to allow flexibility. The turbines turn at a speed which allows emergency escape of a creature which gets stuck inside it.
