Automated car, also referred to as a driverless car or self-driving car or a robotic car, is a vehicle that is self-sufficient and able to sense its environment and navigate without the help of a human. Such cars are in their development mode but as of May 2017, the permitted automated cars on roads are not yet fully autonomous. But there are some partially automated cars that have hit the roads with their gearless technology.
They are a future of automobile industry. They are encapsulated with a variety of future techniques for detection of their surroundings like- radar, laser light, odometry, GPS, computerised vision and etc. They have advanced control systems that interpret and use the sensory information for identifying the navigation paths along with overcoming the obstacles and signs. They even have powerful control systems that analyse and sense data for distinction of different cars on the roads to plan the path to the destination.
Automated cars have been adopted in the market faster than the traditional adoption rates in the automobile industry for the new technologies. This is because automated cars are better in case of safety, and also increases available personal time. Owning an automated car not only gives us the advantage of owning a private car, but also helps to cope up with the financial and environmental drawbacks.
For a long period of time, auto industry had seen a trend of shared mobility services. But with automated cars, people who cannot drive, do not face the trouble any longer and can use their robotic cars for transport. Since they have artificial intelligence, there is lack of human error which leads to accidents. Automated cars have become the need for future owing to their lack of air pollution which is caused by the fumes produced by the traditional cars.
The automated cars use their sensors to adjust a car’s speed based on the traffic that is present in front of it. It also helps in automated parallel parking. Automated cars can make adjustments to the cabin like moving seats, closing the windows, also retracting the steering wheel.
Automated cars will also contribute to shared mesh of traffic and help in routing the information through the vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Automated cars are a blessing for the disabled people and a relief to the travellers from driving along long routes.
Uber tested their driverless car in California 2016 when it carried two people to run them with one person behind the wheel to test drive it.
