Should the United States return to moon or try to go to other planets?

Ever since the dawn of 2017, NASA has made it extremely clear about its goal of wanting to land on Mars. Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO has also made clear plans to colonise Mars by 2024. With the discovery of frozen water beneath the surface, scientists are motivated to start a Martian colony. Orion is the NASA’s new next-generation spacecraft made for long space exploration. However, the question arises on whether it is feasible for colonising Mars or should we focus back to the Moon.

WHY SHOULD WE RETURN TO THE MOON?

The technology is evolving every day. But complications of colonising Mars are more than what people realise. The planning for Orion’s return is set in such a manner that even if the main engine fails after landing on the Moon, the Earth’s gravitational force will pull the capsule back on it for a safe landing of the crew members. The annual flights to the lunar orbit are expected to begin by 2023.

When the Moon has become so safe in return, some believe that it would be better to shift the focus from other planets to the Moon. There are merits and demerits of returning from Mars vs Moon.  In 2010, President Obama had indicated that U.S. should not return to Moon since it had been done in the past. However, returning to Moon is great for the Government’s space agency.

For Mars mission, there is a need for a large amount of fund and discipline. There aren’t enough technologies that can be used for reaching Mars. It is better to work on colonising the Moon first before reaching out to the Mars. The Moon can be used as an experimental backdrop until the complex technologies can be brought to life. Moon is much closer and has a lot of resources that can help in rebuilding the Earth. Returning back to the Moon will help in experiencing interplanetary trips with more safety in mind.

IN A NUTSHELL

Humanity is reaching towards setting foot on Mars and other planets in the Solar System. The project is full of risks and bold moves yet the possibilities presented are unlimited. With colonisation of the Moon or other planets, the Earth will become unburdened. The problems of overpopulation, deforestation, depletion of resources etc will be solved. The project will take time for completion owing to budget restraints and challenges faced by the ordeal. In the meantime, the Moon is a better place to look out for.
